The eight panels were commissioned by the Port of Grays Harbor to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Port on December 12, 2011.
Compass Rose
The compass rose, a navigational emblem in the foreground, with Capt. Gray’s ship of discovery, log piles, and a 1970’s timber freighter in the background.
Estuary
Flocks of shorebirds — the cormorant, widgeons and plovers — and the plants of a healthy ecosystem suggest the international significance of Bowerman Basin for migratory birds. Native Americans in a traditional canoe fish just up the coast under the famous Northwest moon petroglyph.
Pilotage
Depiction of the tricky business of transferring the harbor pilot to his vessel in the challenging conditions for which the Grays Harbor bar (navigational hazard) is famous.
Rails, Ties, and Tankers
Depiction of the importance of the trans-shipment activities of Grays Harbor as linked to its rail connections to all points East. Logos included are that of Puget Sound and Pacific Railroad; Imperium Renewables (largest bio-diesel plant in the United States), and Rognlins Inc., a local construction company.
Westport Marina
Dredging, a Westport Shipyard yacht, birds, crab traps, floats, a buoy, trawlers and charter boats, fishing gear from back in the day — all signifying the complex business of this marina at the mouth of Grays Harbor.
Working Waterfront
Depiction of export activities of Grays Harbor including old pulp loading methods unique to Grays Harbor, car loading, and longshoremen loading slings of logs; ILWU logo in the lower left corner and Brusco tug logo in lower right corner.
Piles and Silos
Piles of contracts, manifests and invoices for soybeans and logs, with the Port’s recently-built grain silos, a modern yarder and an old straddle loader in the background. The logo for AG Processing, Inc. (an agricultural co-op) appears in the lower left corner and the logo for Dkoram Lumber appears in the lower right corner.
Harbor Top to Bottom
A visionary compilation of the Harbor from the Bowerman air field to the Chehalis Bridge, under a rainbow with bank fishermen, a gillnetter, goose, heron, aid to navigation, and outbound freighter. The Port of Grays Harbor logo appears in the lower right corner.
